After a busy day in Louisville, Kentucky we decided to go take a quick break at Wight-Meyer Vineyards that’s nestled in rural Kentucky. Getting there was interesting, Michael kept commenting that at least it didn’t seem in the middle of nowhere or on a dirt road. Until it did become in the middle of nowhere and ended with a dirt road. Also, it was pouring down rain when we arrived.

We each tasted six different wines
Michael’s Tasting
3 Reds by Wright
The smell of this wine was good but when Michael tasted it fell short. It had soft Tannis, hints of cherry and spicy blueberry. He thought it was good but plain especially compared to my 4 Horseman.
Estate Vignoles
Yes Vignoles, if you are a long-time reader, you know that Michael loves Vignoles. He always has to try them. I always make sure never to get a Vignoles in my tasting so Michael can pick it for his. This dry white Vignoles had tones of apricot and pear. He thought it was too acidic.
Vignoles
This Vignoles is a semi-sweet again similar to the Estate Vignoles it had tastes of apricot and pear. Sadly, for Michael the two Vignoles didn't live up to his expectations.
Buffalo Head Red
Michael was very excited to try this sweet red concord wine which had been aged in bourbon barrels for 10 months. While it was good it just wasn’t speaking to Michael. He was sort of disappointed in it.
Holiday Red Spice
A sweet red wine that is a blend of their Concord with cinnamon chips, orange peel, allspice, and cloves. It was okay. While good, we prefer Van Till Winery’s Chai Spice.
Sweet Blackberry
This is one of their dessert wines. Michael enjoyed it, but it is defiantly a wine that is for dessert it is a fruit forward wine made with Marion Blackberries.
My Tasting
4 Horseman
This wine was weird but in a good way. It didn’t have much of a smell but it sure had a lot going on. It had soft Tannis, hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove spices. It finishes with cherry and strawberry. We ended up getting a bottle of this wine to bring home.
Riesling
This was an obvious choice for me to get. There are always grapes that Michael and I always gravitate to and for me it's Riesling. This was a semi-sweet with tones of green apple. They weren’t kidding when they said tone of green apple. It was like having a green apple Starburst.
Pine Creek White
So, this wine, I want to say it might have been an old bottle and towards the end. The written tasting notes were light and fruity with peach tones. It is a blend of the Kentucky Diamond and a splash of Concord. However, I didn’t get any peach tones, it tasted to us earthy and minerally.
Kentucky Diamond
This is the winery’s best seller and honestly, we could see why. It was light, crisp and just the right amount of fruitiness that would please any crowd. It was my second favorite out of my tasting.
Lissa’s Sangria
This sweet red is a mix of Concord and fruit flavors with an orange zest finish. I thought at first it might have been Michael’s Holiday Red Spice wine because it tasted like Christmas at the end. It was in desperate need of being served with ice.
Amy’s Apple Pie
One of their dessert wines while Michael tried their other, I think this one was a winner. It was so smooth and not offensively sweet that you literally feel like you are having an apple pie but are only missing the crust.
So, when we narrowed our tastings to the best they were: 4 Horseman, Kentucky Diamond, and Amy’s Apple Pie. Honorable mentions: 3 Reds by Wight and Lissa’s Sangria.
We liked the winery. The lady serving us was clearly the owner and she was super friendly and liked seeing Lizzy (I mean, who doesn’t?). We got oyster crackers to share and cleanse our palette. Lizzy thought they were great crackers. They do have a nice outside spot however, it was raining a lot so we sat at one of the indoor tables. So once again near the Kentucky Bourbon trail, we end up finding a winery instead of a distillery.
