Lizzy's First Fishing Trip

One of my dad’s wishes was to take Lizzy fishing at Pomme de Terre Lake, a name Lizzy thought funny as she kept calling it Potato Lake. When the weather cooled down at the end of August and hearing that my parents were going out camping; I quickly got our own pop-up ready and bought Lizzy a fishing pole from Walmart.
We arrived at Outlet campground. My parents were already there after a stressful time of getting the pop-up since I hadn’t backed it up since last October. Looking around the site I realized we would be in full sun most of the time. So, after talking with the campground host, we were able to switch to the other side of my parent’s site. Also, thankfully my dad backed up the pop-up this time. Then came the part of getting the site setup for three nights.

As we prepared dinner, Lizzy practiced casting with her new fishing pole. She also got to try out the playground. Then after dinner she wanted to go fishing at the river. I not yet having a fishing license had my mom come too, she also provided the worms. Lizzy tried casting but still lacking experience so we helped her. She managed to catch two fish back-to-back!!

The next day we went fishing at the river. My mom was mostly assigned to helping Lizzy and cutting up worms for everyone. Lizzy caught three fish!! Really, she is coming quite the fisherman. I managed only to catch two. We got a chocolate shake later to celebrate. After a nap, which Lizzy slept hard and took some convincing to wake up we went to go swimming at the lake. It was like bath water. Lizzy tried to make a sandcastle like she did when in Sanibel Island, Florida. After showers, we got ready for dinner. My dad taught Lizzy how to kill flies. We ended the night with a small fire.

The following day, we went back to fishing. Lizzy was kind of done with it. But liked cheering everyone on. I “caught” the biggest fish though technically never got it out of the water. It was a catfish and my parents were grateful that the line snapped. Though sadly I lost my bobber. To celebrate the end of the fishing, off again to get chocolate shakes this time at a place called Memaw’s.

While the rest of us napped in the pop-ups, Lizzy colored and played. She later found chips and then went to wake up my parents to tell them the air condition wasn’t working. It was working it just dripped on her paper she was coloring. My mom, Lizzy and I went for a small hike. Lizzy was excited to use a walking stick I had gotten years ago at the Grand Canyon. After dinner which Lizzy helped, Lizzy and my dad sang “put another log on the fire” as they set up the campfire for tonight. Lizzy wanting to end the day with also fishing at least one more time got excited as we walked to where we fish to see an armadillo.

We wanted to see the lunar eclipse. I had to explain to Lizzy exactly what a lunar eclipse was in which she wondered what would happen if the moon fell to Earth and what would happen if we didn’t have gravity. Thankfully after some answering of quite frankly scary questions she went to sleep. I ended the night by waiting to see the lunar eclipse. It was fun seeing though the noises of coyotes in the woods gave it more of an eerie feeling.

We left the next day, Lizzy once again helping with our pop-up and getting packed. We stopped at Osceola Cheese which sadly hasn’t done samples since COVID. Lizzy enjoyed camping with her grandma and grandpa. She really wants to go back but take Daddy with us.
